In Williamson County, Texas, our justice system responded to the coronavirus through innovation, ingenuity and a commitment to service. Just a week after the Pensacola jury reached its verdict, Chief United States District Judge Mark E. Walker temporarily closed both Pensacola federal courthouses to the public in order to protect public safety. The wheels of the federal justice system will continue to turn as surely and safely as possible, while ensuring the well-being of everyone in the process – from judges and jurors to lawyers and defendants.Conducting the grand jury proceedings and the in-person criminal jury trials were significant achievements, given limitations imposed by COVID-19. We look forward to the re-opening of the Pensacola courthouses, and the resumption of grand jury proceedings and criminal jury trials in them.We want people to know that we intend to continue to pursue timely justice and protect the public safety and interest, as much as possible.Lawrence Keefe, U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Florida. Our entire country is properly focused on stopping the deadly spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Similarly, two months ago we announced that federal grand juries had quietly resumed activity in the Northern District, which encompasses 23 counties stretching from Pensacola down to Gainesville. We want the public to have trust and confidence that their justice system has not been sidelined by COVID-19. The league offered another proposal for baseball’s return Monday, but many hurdles still remain. “We have been ready to begin our return to [the] office in the U.S., but took a pause, given the increase in infection rates in many parts of the world,” Greenberg said during Chubb’s 2019 second-quarter earnings call on July 29. Autres; TVA Nouvelles. Still, it is vitally important for the work of our justice system to continue, as safely as possible.Finding the appropriate balance between the active pursuit of justice and protecting public health, the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida this month successfully conducted the first two federal or state in-person criminal jury trials in Florida since COVID-19 restrictions began in March. You know, the South Carolinians who do care enough about ourselves and our fellow citizens to wear face masks these days? Can some of the folks in the “I ain’t gonna do it” cult just give us some clues, already? It’s scary realizing that right now the members of the “I ain’t gonna do it” horde are the most powerful people in South Carolina when it comes to the determining the fate of COVID-19 in our state. They sure have more power than State Epidemiologist Linda Bell, whose pleas and appeals for South Carolinians to wear face masks continue to be ignored — even as she sounds more and more exasperated with every plea and appeal. They sure have more power than Gov. Your Turn. These are some of the numbers of daily COVID-19 cases that have been recorded in South Carolina lately.Yes, you’re very observant: the numbers are progressively higher, aren’t they? These numbers represent how many South Carolinians have died from COVID-19 during various recent one-day periods.Yes, you’re very observant again: these numbers also seem to be spiking, don’t they? How many more COVID-19 cases and deaths do we still have to rack up in South Carolina to finally stir the “I ain’t wearing no face mask and giving up my cherished freedoms” crowd out of its proud state of ignorant defiance — and to convince it to help stop the spread of this modern-day plague?I mean, we’re at 26,000-plus total cases (and counting) right now.And we’re at 600-plus total deaths (and counting), too.Are we at least getting near the numbers that we obviously need to hit to get the “I ain’t gonna do it” mob to stop freeloading on the goodwill of the rest of us South Carolinians? The presiding judge met with the attorneys for the prosecution and defense so all concerns were addressed before the trial began. We fully support that decision – because we share the priority of protecting public health and safety. We were careful to proceed to trial with juries present in a criminal case – as one of only a handful of federal courts around the nation and the first and only one in Florida. The successful trials reflects the Northern District’s determination to carefully balance moving the federal justice system forward with its essential functions, even as we place a premium on protecting public health.
